Personal Essays

$100 per accepted personal essay or memoir. 

Send us your essays and memoirs—the ones that you’ve been holding onto for longer than you can remember.

Share what you’ve learned in this life, celebrate your hard-fought victories, or tell us your greatest mistakes. We want to hear your voice and listen to the intimate perspective of your unique selves.

We’re open to any personal essays or memoirs from any person. We aim to publish writing that investigates reality, shows vulnerability, or strikes us with brutal honesty.

Guidelines

We’re currently accepting submissions of fiction, poetry, and personal essays or memoirs for publication in our online literary magazine. If you've been looking for literary magazines that pay for accepted work, then you've come to the right place. We welcome writers from all backgrounds, whether you're an emerging or established. We are open to submissions for 2025 and will be reading your submissions year-round. We’re looking to publish your work and hope that you’re excited to submit it to us!

Payment

We offer payment for the publication of any accepted works. We pay $100 for any accepted piece of fiction, poem, or personal essay/memoir.  We pay primarily via PayPal, but we can also pay via E-transfer, Direct Deposit, or a cheque in the mail if needed. We pay in USD.

Open Submissions

We are open to submissions for 2025 and consider submissions from anywhere in the world. Whether you’re emerging or established, we want to read what you’ve written!

Formatting

We prefer submissions in any legible 12-point font with double-spaced paragraphs.

Please send your work as a PDF, Doc, or Docx File. 

Since submissions are read blind, please do not include your name or any identifying information in the documents that you upload.

We appreciate careful proofreading, but we don’t disqualify submissions for minor formatting inconsistencies or typos. There’s no need to worry or withdraw just because you spot a mistake.

Length

We have no formal word limits, but we tend not to publish work longer than 8,000 words.

How do I submit my writing?

We consider submissions online via Email at Submissions@lionsgateliterature.com 

with the subject line format of:

“Submission – [Your Name] – [Title of Your Piece] – [Fiction]” 

Please send your work as a PDF, Doc, or Docx Files.

Submissions must include the PayPal transaction ID number.

A $5 reading fee for online submissions helps cover our expenses and allows us to keep providing opportunities for writers around the world to submit their work.

Simultaneous Submissions

We are happy to consider pieces that have also been submitted elsewhere. Please notify us immediately if your work is accepted by another journal.

Can I submit multiple times or to different categories?

Yes! Writers are welcome to submit to as many categories as they like, and as many times as they want, so long as each piece meets the specific guidelines. Just make sure to submit each entry separately for proper consideration.

Response Time

We try to respond to each submission within 4–6 weeks.

Language

We consider submissions primarily written in English, but any code-switching is welcome.

AI Submissions

We do not accept AI-generated submissions.

Who can participate in the contests?

Our contests are open to writers from all around the world, of any background or experience level. Whether you’re just beginning your journey or you have years of practice, we welcome you to join our community and share your voice.

We don’t discriminate on the basis of age, ancestry, disability, gender identity or expression, nation of origin, race, religion, sex, or sexual orientation.

Withdrawing a Submission

You can withdraw your online submission by sending us an email to Withdraw@Liongateliterature.com titled  

“Withdraw – [Your Name] – [ Name of Your Work ]”

Rights

We purchase first rights and online publishing rights for accepted works.
